Media Literacy seminar

Hi Guys,

I attended a Media Literacy seminar at Rice in June. If you are interested in Digital Storytelling, Google "Capture Wales" for good international examples of digital stories.

Also, here's a sampling of the concepts from the course that I hope to introduce in my Teen Scene program this fall.
1. All media are construction-not a simple reflection of reality.

2. Media constructs reality-it offers a majority of the observations and experiences from which we build up our personal understandings of the world.

3.Audiences negotiate meaning in the media-we negotiate meaning according to individual factors such as personal needs and anxieties.

4.Most media production is a business. Media Literacy aims to encourage an awareness of how the media are influenced by commercial considerations.

5.All media products are advertising, in some sense, in that they proclaim values and ways of life (explicitly or implicitly).

6.Media have social and political implications.

7.Form and content are closely related in the media. Different media will report the same event, but create different impressions and messages.

8. Each medium has a unique aesthetic form, just as we notice the pleasing rhythms of certain pieces of poetry or prose, we ought to enjoy the forms and effects of different media.

See you on the 23rd,
Kathy@Ring
