I've had this thought for some time about using Myspace as a medium for promoting teen services. I think it would be a wonderful tool for what is basically free adverstising. There are no fees involved, HPL employees would have complete creative control over it, and it would require only monthly updates to maintain. Teens are already myspace fanatics, so I figure why not use it as another way to reach them?
I'm guessing this idea has either been considered, is being considered, or is already in developmental stages, giving the recent emphasis on HPL's use of blogs and wiki media. Plus I think I might have heard of it being discussed? Does anyone know?
Using the myspace format, we can post teen services, events, and programs in the form of blogs and announcements. We can establish a working list of teen patrons through the friend's list. We can provide links for other library services, youth-related services, or annual library events. Music, movie, and book reviews can be included. Links to the profiles of famous YA authors. The format offers all kinds of potential for including pics, video, music, mixed media, and style.
Using myspace would be more than a one-way form of advertisement. It would create a type of involvement and interaction on the part of the teen, from joining as a friend to posting comments and ideas about our services. Teens would feel a type of vested interest in what we're doing, and in turn we could tap into their interests and preoccupations. Also, myspace can provide a hip or trendy edge to our services.
