Our last teen meeting was great for discussing programming. The best yet, I think. Even if no concrete events were decided or new activities created, I think the group discussions on what is working and not working in our individual branches was enough, if nothing else, to generate thoughts on different methods of obtaining new ideas for programs. One thing that kept popping up was surveys. Between the discussion in our group and the general reference to their usefulness, it got me to thinking about how we could use these to our advantage. Maybe some type of master survey should be included on the new myspace page once it premiers? We're always giving surveys, why not use it in the new medium/format (?) as well to reach a larger and broader customer base? Maybe we could spice this one up. Give it some personality and urban-hip-cool appeal. Say...
- What do you like/don't like about other libraries?
- If you could visit anywhere, where would you go? (can be used to determine themed events)
- What's your most/least favorite holiday? (to know which ones to better market or accomodate)
- What are your top 5 hang-out spots? (to know where library stands in the sense of how we're similar and different to those places and how can better mimick the more appropriate spots)
- If you could be any superhero, who and why? (can tie this in with careers, comparing skills and qualities of existing professions with the traits their favorite heroes possess)
- ...and so on.
These were just some examples off the top of my head. I imagine with enough thinking heads we could probably come up with a pretty solid questionnaire and analysis key for the responses.

I like it Jason. What do you think of another sample question pertaining to a favorite hobby? I'm asking my teens if any are interested in creating films. I attended SWAMP last summer and having trouble finding teens interested in it. What do you think?
Sorry for the tardy response. For a while I was thinking nobody was reading these. Well, films is a promising profession and something growing here in Texas. Plus there are tons of support through shows and contests for independent filmmakers here in Houston. I think asking about their favorite hobby is a great question to include. It can show a lot about the teen's interest, and reveal what we can work on adding to our collection and developing in our programming and what we can weed out.
